At the age of eighteen, I moved all the way from Hong Kong to San Francisco with my mother. She was a woman of vision and boundless ambition, having already gotten her whole family to Hong Kong from mainland China. From there, she took an opportunity through her company to come to the United States, where she worked to further her career by starting her own business. I came with her to help her with that business while I attended college.

It was just the two of us at first, but it wasn’t long before my younger sister came to the US as well. In addition to school and work, I played a major role in raising her. As a big brother, I learned the challenges and responsibilities of caring for another human being. It was a lot to juggle, but I’m proud of myself for being able to support my mom and sister.

But when my student visa expired after graduation, I learned I would have to go back to Hong Kong. I was devastated. Building a life in the US was my dream. And suddenly I was being shown the door.

It felt like a huge step back, but I knew I had to keep moving forward. My determination to make it through the day-to-day helped me to develop a new mindset, and led me to a milestone job at a Stockholm-based advertising company looking to break in to the Asian market. In my time with them, I gained some vital experience in business, learning how to be executive, efficient, and entrepreneurial. But perhaps most importantly, I learned the importance of providing valuable service to clients.

When the company ended their operations in Asia, I found myself at a crossroads. I still had my Hong Kong residency and a full year on my working visa. I decided to do something totally adventurous, and bought a one-way ticket to Australia.

While staying in a hostel in Sydney, I started meeting people and networking in the hopes of finding a job. I connected with a manager at a fitness club downtown, and got a temp job distributing flyers. My first day started at 5 AM, and you can imagine how little interest I was getting at that hour. But as the day went on, I really started getting people’s attention by being more animated. I found myself having a lot of fun, and successfully connecting with people in a short amount of time as they passed by.

By the next day, the club were receiving more than twice as many phone calls as when they had two people handing out flyers. It hadn’t taken me long to impress, and my first day of work quickly turned into an assistant manager position in Sydney.

When I finally made my way back to the United States, I chose to remain in the fitness industry, finding great fulfillment in helping others reach their goals and better their lives. After several years, I started my own business: Level Up Personal Training.

Inspired by my father’s decision to get into real estate in Hong Kong, I decided to take steps towards earning my own license in California. Real estate proved to be the perfect career for me, combining my experience with sales and marketing with my commitment to helping others. In the years since, I’ve dedicated every day to providing the best service—and the best results—for each one of my clients.
